Dow Jones Industrial Average 1902-today (Click graph for original) Creatingwealth.co.nz in New Zealand has created an interesting site about the index from 1897-2004 and the influences of historical events in the index.

Often the crashes of 2008, 2000, 1987 and 1929 are compared. In the Dow Jones history, however, the crisis of 2007-2009 only was a little dip. Left you see a StockCharts graphic with the index from 1902 to today (monthly updated). Next fifteen years investments were very profibable. March 29, 1999 Dow Jones closed for the first time above 10000 (Wikipedia). The growth continued to 11722 (January 14, 2000). Last decade, however, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped from 11497 (December 31, 1999) to 10428 (December 31, 2009), with heavy peaks and lows. The dot-com bubble had its peak March 10, 2000 (NASDAQ peaking at 5132 (DJ 10367) and ended October 9, 2002 (Dow Jones 7286). After a spectacular recovery October 9, 2007, a new peak was reached (Dow Jones 14164). In the financial crisis (2007-2009) the stocks made a free fall. The brokers were broken. By March 9, 2009, the DJIA reached a closing low at 6547.05. December 31, 2011, DJIA closed at 12217.
