How often doesn't it occur that you are downloading a file at 1 or 2 kilobytes per second or
even less, and this is happening with a connection which should reach higher speeds. The cause of
this problem could be that the server on which the date resides is very busy and can't
handel it all.
What do you think about the situation in which your downloads stops because your dail-up
connection stops or your crashes because you were working with a bad program during your
download? You can start your download all over again.
Download accelerator
To solve the above problems a 'download accelerator' could be the solution. The normal procedure
of a downaccelerator is that it's processes every download request. Before the real download
starts the accelerator first starts searching for other servers on which the same data resides.
This is done with the help of a database of server located around the world. If the data is found
on one of those other servers, the speed of the connection with this server is tested. The
accelerator then chooses the fastest of these servers and test if these servers supports a
'download resume'. This 'download resume' means that the download can resume from every point, for example
where the download stopted. If this is the case, then several connections with different
(if possible) servers are made.
The data is cut into pieces and every section can be downloaded from a different server.
This mutiple connection has the advantage that the download continues even if one server is
very busy (and slow) because of many downloads.
A good download-accelerator is 'Download Accelerator Plus'(DAP) this one can make up to 8
simultaneous connections. In this way te maximum download speed for your connection can be
reached.
Download Accelerator Plus versie 5.3 can be downloaded
here.
Installing and configuring
After downloading and installing 'download accelerator plus' you need to configure it. Therefor start start the program if
it hasn't started yet. To configure the program go to the menu item 'Downloads' followed by 'Options/configuration'.
- At menu item 'General' mark your used browser.
- At menu item 'save to' state your 'default download directory'.
- At menu item 'connection' choose your connection type/speed, and choose the 'acceleration mode'
('super accelerated speed' should only be used if you have cable).
- At menu item 'Advanced' mark 'Advanced triggering', this ensures that you have a choice to use or not to use DAP to
download a file.
If you want to download files smaller than 500kb it is wise not to use DAP, because the mirror site search would take more time than the download itself.
