Getting a domainname

A domainname is an adress of a website like www.microsoft.com, such a name cannot be used randomly for it could already be in use. Therefor if you want to use a name you first have to find out if that name isn't already taken. This is done with a so called domainname check.

Domainname Check

If you have a good website you certainly want to have it visited as often as possible, but for this it has to be easily found. A very long domainname is not good for remembrance so it has to be short and catching. All webmasters know this, therefor many good names are already taken. So you have to search for a name which is still free. You could do this by typing the wanted domainname in the addressbar of your browser, but this does not garantee that the address is not taken yet, it could not be in use but already taken. A beter method is to use a domainname checker, which checks if a domainname is taken. This is done be consulting the databases with all the domainnames in use. Below is such a domainname checker made possible by Ladot/Active ISP with it you can check a domainname in the categorie '.com','.net', '.org', '.info', '.co.uk', '.biz', '.cc', '.nu', '.as', '.be', '.fr', '.de' and '.nl'. If not taken you could order it directly with LaDot.

Using a redirect

If the purchase of a real domain name is to expensive, but you still want a short and easy to remember adress to your website, you could think about using a redirect.

If you're using a redirect which could be like 'go.to/mywebsite', then the person which typed this name into the adressbar of his/her browser will be instantly redirected to the adress which you have stated in the form you've filled in at 'go.to'.
A major disadvantage of this kind of domainname is the commercials usually shown if someone uses the 'go.to'adress to reach your website.

At the below redirect provider you can search for a suitable for your website and apply for that name.

www.v3.com (go.to/sitename, surf.to/sitename, all.at/sitename, etc.)
RealRedirect.com(sitename.browse.nu, sitename.tik.nu, etc.)
