Persecution of protestants Due to the persecution of the protestants (1560-1640) by the catholics of Spain (Philip) the van Popering family (and other Belgium protestants) flee from their home villages to the South of Holland (in provence Sealand). It's possible the Van Popering lived already in Antwerp, due to the surrender of Antwerp in 1580 (in advantage of Philip), the inhabitants of Antwerp emigrated to Holland In the provence of Zeeland , the inhabitants were 'more or less' free to chose their own religion Flee to Bergen op Zoom (south -Netherlands) This religion war with the Spanish was an independency war. The provinces of Holland also wished to be free from the Spanish government because of the high tax (10 %) and freedom of religion. In order to achieve this goal Prince William of Orange, count of Holland, became Protestant to oppose the king of Spain, who was catholic.
