Fallen Soldiers 1List One: Polish Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade (Samodzielna Brygada Strzelcow Karpackich) 1940-42
* Formed in April, 1940 in Syria, as an independent Polish unit within the operational jurisdiction of the French Army.
* Composed primarily of Polish soldiers who had evaded capture by the Germans or Soviets during the September Campaign, 1939.
* Commanded by Colonel (later General) Stanislaw Kopanski.
* Evacuated to Palestine on June 30, 1940, after the surrender of the French Army and accepted into the jurisdiction of the British Army.
* Transferred to Alexandria, Egypt in October, 1940. First casualties sustained during raids by the Italian Air Force.
* Returned to Haifa, Palestine in early 1941.
* Back to Egypt in late spring 1941.
* Summer 1941 spent at defensive positions, initially at Mersa Matruh then from the end of June onward at Sidi Baggush.
* August 18 -28, 1941 transported to Tobruk with a strength of 288 officers and 4,777 other ranks.
* While defending Tobruk at Selent and Ras-el-Madauar Hill (September 29 - December 12), casualties were caused by attacks and counter-attacks, patrol activities, mines, enemy artillery and aerial bombardment. Disease, heat, insects, sandstorms and poor food added to the toll.
* Visited by General Sikorski on November 12, 1941.
* The first British offensive began on November 18, 1941 but ultimately failed.
* Participated in the second offensive, the pursuit of the Italian and German trrops. On December 9/10, 1941, retook the heights of Madauar Hill and the town of Acroma.
* December 15-17 participated in the Battle for El-Ghazala, taking 1,634 prisoners, including 59 officers, while suffering losses of 23 killed and 96 wounded.
* December 31, 1941 - January 2, 1942 participated in the Battle for Bardia.
* January - March, 1942 participated in the defence of El-Mechili.
* March 22, 1942 withdrawn from the front to the camp of El-Amiriyan near Alexandria.
* April 19 - May 1, 1942 transported to Palestine.
* May 3, 1942 incorporated into the Polish Second Corps as the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division with General Bronislaw Duch in command.
