Vitamins... the do's and do not's !!

So yeah, every petstore sells them. Vitamins for your reptilians. Sure, if you feed your pet snake crickets, it will need them.  Cause a cricket has almost no Calcium, and is not of the same breed as a rabbit :P. But think about the content of a rabbit... It has Calcium in the bones, lots of protein in the intestents, and all sorts of added minerals eded. It is a complete package of food that will normally does not need added things.. agree ? Ok so why not you might wonder... Well, I ask myself one question when I have doubt on things I give my burms as an extra...

DOES IT NEED IT WHEN OUT IN THE WILD ?????

Please take a look at the below stated points..  and think a minute about them..:

--------------------------------------------------

In the wild they do not get added vitamins.

I did not see any snake wherever, buying them at the local drugstore...

A healthy snake does not need added vitamins, it's all in the food they eat / places they are...

From Calcium to A and D3, if your snake has direct sunlight or UV emitting bulbs, and feeds on good, healthy prey, it's all in there.

Overdosing the usual AD3 vitamins ( blue lagoon ) will result in a few "forced" sheds, and is not that good for your snake..

Some folks ( including me ) can use the AD3 supplement to have the snakes molt, in case of bad skin or whatever. But be carefull, it is strong stuff. If overdosed, it will result in a shedding of the skin, and again, an again... get the picture..?

So, when can ya use the vitamins..? Well I only use the AD3 supplement on my snakes, and ONLY in half doses,in the fall, when they get ready for the winter. Thatway I give them a little bit extra for the cold period. In case of a fight, an incounter with the heatbulbs ( burn marks ) or general skin problems, I sometimes spray a thinned solution directly on the snakes.. but very sparingly, cause again, overdosing is never good...

You can say that untill some point I treat my snakes asif they were in the wild... and there are no reptile vitamins there...
