“The blue planet, a natural history of the oceans”, narrated by David Attenborough. DVD, video. (also as book.)

5 episodes plus two extra documentaries on three disks, 488 minutes (more then 6 hours!).

It took about 5 years to make this incredible beautiful documentary. Episode one explains about the ocean itself, such as its currents. Each  next episode focuses on a different habitat such as the coral reef, the open seas, the deep seas. The extra episodes are “the making of”, and “deep trouble” featuring some of the modern threats the oceans are facing.

This documentary gives a good understanding  and insight in the sea, which has practical value while snorkeling.

BBC website Blue Planet

freedive!” by Terry Maas

Especially the “physiology” chapters are worth reading. At the end is a chapter about spear fishing (@$#%!!), and depth records.

The son of the author died during free diving. Deaths and accidents are not uncommon amongst experienced free divers, due to the great depths and very long underwater time, creating the risk of a “black out” while surfacing. Thus, “physiology” focuses on the why and how of “black out”.

a hard cover reef guide with beautiful photos and useful information about the various animals (fish, worms, snails, mammals, etc) on the coral reef. Debelius wrote more reef ad fish guides, all are excellent, and unrivalled in text and photos.

ocean warrior” by Paul Watson

who is out there truly defending  the whales and other marine life? Paul Watson and his crew ! Read all about some of the actions of  Paul Watson  and the “Sea Shepherd” crew, such as the ramming of the Sierra, an illegal whaling boat responsible for illegally killing thousands of whales.

Currently, one of the boats of the Sea Shepherd fleet, the Sirenian, is helping the National Park rangers from the Galapagos Islands stopping the illegal (shark) fishing boats.

Other boats are involved in other programs.

trucs op het rif” by Peter Nahke, dutch language.

translated from german; ‘Tricks im Riff”.

Great book about behaviour on the reef such as the symbioses between various animals, chemical defense, camouflage. After reading this, you will know more what is going on at the reef.
