What does NOT work
(This list may grow over time - or shrink)

Java
Well, embedding Java-counter based script information in your Template file doesn’t work. I tried and it gets thrown out. No trace left in the output-file. Bummer. I haven’t tried it with HTML etc, but my best guess it won’t work either. It’s because the XML is used to generate the XHTML webpages from. And there’s no  programming available to handle this custom code. It does make sense.

Meta-keys
I haven’t found a way yet to have keywords being embedded one way or another. Not without adding them manually afterwards.

Note: now this can be achieved easily with the tool MassReplaceit, iComment or iWebEnhancer. Depending on what you need, you can use these to get more by post-processing the rendered output.

Noteworthy
There’s a lot about widgets in the xml. Reserved for .mac subscribers only as far as I can tell. for most part that is. Some examples:
  1. macwithmac-widget    “MadeWithMacInfo”
  2. rss-widget
  3. photocastsubscribe-widget
  4. messageme-widget
  5. counter-widet
  6. slideshow-widget
  7. podcastsubscribe-widget
Where they reside in code or resources or whatever... I don’t know. If I have the guts, I start looking into it. If you feel like doing it, please do.

(20060224 update) There are some things in code that may be altered, although I doubt that’s a good idea. It requires changing the iWeb code. Post-processing the output is a relatively simple way to get stuff into iWeb it can’t do now.

iWeb and features
Suggestions etc.
If you have something to add to all this, then please email me. For example that you discovered something with iWeb that’s better than the invention of sliced bread... so to speak.

If you want me to link to your site or vice versa, let me know. Oh yeah, remove the “be” from my address in your mail app. It works better that way :-) Just trying to avoid spam.

Please remember my DO’s and DON’Ts statement on the first pages.... I get plenty of email as it is already. Please respect that. Thank you.

Future
Anyone’s guess. My chrystal ball says...
Knowing Apple has WebObjects as a product, there can be a growth path to predict. Imagine the ease of iWeb with the power of existing stuff like dreamweaver for example... combining and linking in the easy way with WebObjects. Try to imagine what that could do!
iWeb Pro perhaps? And no, f.e. Freeway might currently not be the proper answer to that. Although it has its charms.

My wishlist
Not necessarily in this order...
  1. Forms the iWeb way :-) Who can build a template? ;-)
  2. Multi-language sites - I do know a way around.. pfffff never mind. I won’t change my default login language a zillion times I want to edit something. Changing from account to account is not an option either. I would like to be able to change the language for a page and per page if I want to.
  3. A lot of sites carry a guestbook. Could be nice. Requires external services though. Now requires an external solution and post-processing.
  4. How about a forum capability?
  5. More than one site one can manage, more flavors domain.sites files for example... and
  6. A webshop which doesn’t cost you an arm-and-a-leg. Now requires an external solution and post-processing.
  7. Meta keys. Support for generating my own keywords to be put into the meta-keys. Or combined with a generator that proposes something usefull. There’s a Summarize tool in the Services submenu. And a dictionairy. The basic tools are there I guess.
  8. Not completely depended on .mac for some of the stuff... Hey Steve, I know you just want to make a few bucks more on .mac and yes, I do understand. And still I would like to choose my own counter! And a bit easy to put it in please.. pretty please? Now only works with post-processing the output.
  9. Embed a Java-script, allowing for more customisation.
  10. Open a link to a new page or Tab in stead of only in the same window. Now would require post-processing the output. Horrendous job, since it would require a selective replacement of code.
Some of the stuff above is addressed by some tools like MassReplaceIt, iWebEnhancer and iComment. See “About Me” for links to these tools.
