Eindhoven
a city to love.

Marketplace in centre.
Eindhoven is a rather old city. It got its cityrights in 1232. It has been a rather small town untill the beginning of last century. Then Anton Philips
started his first little factory over here and a lot of people came from all over Holland to work there (see pictures at linkpage).
After being a couple of little villages together, Eindhoven now became a real city. In 1920 the villages Stratum, Tongelre,
Woensel, Strijp and Gestel were put together with Eindhoven. At that time there were only 46.000 people living here.
The growth of Philips made this number increase very fast and in 1934 the 100.000 was reached. On the 15th of february 1999
we reached the magic number of 200.000 people living here.
During World War II the centre of Eindhoven
was bombed. A lot was destroyed. Everything had to be rebuild and therefor the centre is a rather new one.
Modern buildings are arising more and more, giving Eindhoven the image of a real big
city.
Leading in Technology
This slogan says everything about Eindhoven. It is
the technical center of Holland. Many industries cover mechatronics, automotive and
electronics. Philips of course is the main one.
Old Philips factories near the centre of Eindhoven.
Some of the old Philips
factories have been replaced and the old buildings are used for different uses. In this old factory the public library
of Eindhoven is located.
Besides Philips we have the DAF factory. In the past producing the only
Dutch automobile, now only making big trucks.
Another important site is the Technical University.
Lots of research is done here. For more information have a look at my linkpage.
As an inportant
technical center we of course need our connection with the countries around us. Eindhoven has this
possibility through "Eindhoven Airport". A small, but yet international airport, just outside the city.
Culture - Arts
Beside technical, Eindhoven also is a very cultural city. Lots of works of arts decorate the city at
different places. And of course there are two important museums as well. The Van Abbe museum and Museum Kempenland. The last
one situated in an old chuchbuilding. Both have a seperate links on my linkpage. We also have the open air
prehistoric museum. Here you can be in the prehistoric time for a day. The houses are build like in
that time and the people there act as if they were too.
For the music lover we have the Philips Music Center at the marketplace and of course the City Theatre. Every year
we have the "Jazz in Lighttown" event, a jazz and bluesfestival of world Class.
Recently we have got a new remarkable site in Eindhoven. A statue called "The Flying Pins". It is placed
on one of the incoming roads to the city. Under here is a picture of it, when it was installed there.
