With the finishing of the Afsluitdijk (big dike between Northsea and Zuidersee) in 1936 the creation of a new province started. Ringdikes were constructed and the water inside was pumped away. The North Eastern Polder was ready in 1942, Eastern Flevoland followed in 1957 and Southern Flevoland in 1968. The islands of Urk and Schokland disappeared and became part of the mainland.
The new province of Flevoland was established in 1986.

It is a strange idea that we are walking on the bottom of the sea when we make our trip through the province. Lets start at the official site of the province here.
