Part 5 (Zeeland)

More than a third of Zeeland is water. Until the flood of 1953 the province of Zeeland was just some islands only accessable by boat. Now dikes and bridges make the connection to the mainland. At the moment they are building the biggest tunnel of Europe, 6,6 km long and 60 meter beneath the surface of the Wester Schelde. There are 300 km of dikes in the province.
The province is famous for its beautiful beaches, which attrack millions of visitors every year.
The main ports of Zeeland are Terneuzen and Vlissingen.

Lets start our trip of the province on top and move south over the different ex-islands. First is Schouwen-Duiverland.

The Flood of 1953 and the Delta Works

On the 1st of february 1953 a heavy storm hit Zeeland. A lot of dikes broke and a big part of the province was flooded. 1835 people were killed.
Once and for all the sea needed to be stopped there. The plan for the Delta Works was born. The final part was the Storm Surge Barrier in the New Waterway.
Before we go to Noord Brabant (my home-province) we visit the official Zeeland site to gather our usual touristic information.
