Multifunctional woodblockprints

Starting with a perfect shape, the circle or the square, Jan Schreurs creates new shapes. The pleasant roundings of the circle or square are shattered in a cruel way by the artist and so he creates new signs with the remainings of the old perfect shape: open en closed, small and large, fat and thin, long and short, horizontal and vertical, round and angled shaking signs. Perfection is replaced by the imperfection, order by chaos.

In different ways Jan Schreurs composes his prints: Sometimes made by his intuïtion the other time made by stochastic chance operations, sometimes a combination of the two principles. He operates in the twilight zone between manipulation and chance. Signs with a multi functional meaning are thus created, not determined, just like the music compositions of John Cage. The are meant for serious multi functional use: as a music score for a musician, as a meditation chart for a spiritual goal, as a city map to be used in a city to be build, or as a no yet deciphered code.
