Beyond Expressionism. Asger Jorn and the European Avant-Garde, 1941-1961 (New York University : New York 2005)
    • [abstract] This dissertation examines the artistic and theoretical work of Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-1973). Avoiding the pitfalls of a standard monographic study, with its emphasis on organic development and formal unity it considers Jorn's project through three thematic focuses: the avant-garde, myth, and expressionism. Each section explores the cultural background, elaboration, and transformation of these issues over a twenty-year period. This approach contrasts Jorn's work in the groups Helhesten (1941-1944) and COBRA (1948-1951) with developments in Informel and Abstract Expressionism.
    • Section I elaborates Jorn's conception of the 'Avant-garde' during and after WW II. While American artists turned away from politics and the collective approach to artmaking, both concerns remained central to Jorn. Jorn's interpretation of the avant-garde also challenged that of Guy Debord, his colleague and cofounder of the Situationist International (1957-1972). While Debord rejected painting, Jorn's artworks created sensory experiences which embody or make possible a political critique. His work challenges the separation of art and politics, as well as avant-garde and kitsch. [source: ProQuest].

"Le Bauhaus Imaginiste Contre un Bauhaus Imaginaire". La polémique autour de la question du fonctionnalisme entre Asger Jorn et Max Bill (Université Laval : Québec 2008).
    • [abstract] This dissertation focuses on the historical, ideological and conceptual origins of Asger Jorn's 'counter-functionalist' discourse on modern art and architecture. It looks critically at the polemical debate between Jorn (as well as the members of the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus) and Max Bill, Swiss architect and first director of the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm. The analysis considers the articles published in 1958 in Jorn's Pour la Forme: Ébauche d'une Méthodologie des Arts in light of the individual trajectories of the artists, the specific context of postwar Europe and the history of the modernist avant-garde.

    • [abstract] The article draws parallels between outsider art and situationism, which are often viewed as contradictory. Both movements emerged at the same time and had deep roots in surrealism but tried to move beyond its boundaries. Both movements looked to everyday life and disdained functionalist architecture. The parallel between the two is best illustrated by the friendship between Danish situationist Asger Jorn and French artist and outsider architecture advocate Jean Dubuffet in the early 1960's. The slowing of 1960's utopianism, the splintering of surrealism, and Jorn's death kept these movements separate [Historical Abstracts].

The creative work of Asger Jorn has long been available through catalogues of the paintings and prints. Consequently, a Catalogue Raisonné of the Sketchbooks opens up a hitherto unknown area. Starting in Paris in 1936, the last sketchbook was filled up in 1972. This basic material is now accessible. According to the current status we know of 51 sketchbooks containing a total of 716 sketches by Jorn.
