USB-memory stick-mod

After about 9 months of use my Apacer Handysteno USB-memory stick casing was damaged so badly that I decided to make a new casing.

But what to use….. So, I went looking in shops for something that I could use as a new casing for my memory-stick.

Here is what I found, you know Spongebob’s best friend Patrick? I bought a small plastic replica for only €2,50 @ “de Blokker” a small warehouse type shop

In the cartoon Patrick is not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed…Well that’s going to change!

This one is going to be fitted with 512MB of flashmemory!

STEP 1

- Removing the damaged casing, this one was easy, just a little prying on the casing edges with a screwdriver and it cracked open

STEP 2 – dismembering

- Cutting off the top of Patrick’s head. I was able to cut it off with my swiss army knife because the plastic it’s made off is quite soft.

- the pants / legs were just glued on and a little prying with a screwdriver was enough to separate them.

STEP 3 – making the needed space

- Marking where to cut. I simply held the USB plug against the surface and stuck needles into the pastic at the corners. When I pulled the needles out I stuck the tip of a fine-writer into the hole so I could still see it. Afterwards I put back the tip of the head to see how it aligned. When I took it back off I saw that the ink had rubbed of on the tip of his head and so it was marked exactly in the right place!!! Dumb luck!

- Next, I took out my Dremel and started to cutout the necessary holes. Afterwards I slid the memory-stick into the slot I made, lucky for me I didn’t make it to large, it was even a tight fit, so no need to glue it into place.

STEP 4 – putting it back together

- this one’s easy, to get the legs back on I used some instant-glue, which holds very good, at least, until now!

- The Finished Product!!!
