Coins of the dukes of Brabant

Brabant was the name of a Carolingian pagus. It came under the rule of the Counts of Leuven (Louvain), who enlarged their domain considerably between the 10th and 12th century, with the county of Ukkel-Brussel , the abbeys of Nijvel and Gembloers, and the domains of Antwerpen (1099). Godfried I "with the Beard" (1096-1140) was the first called duke of Brabant.
Later also the city of Maastricht and the lordship Daelhem were added to the territory of Brabant. In 1288 Jan I, the Victorious (1268-1294) won the battle of Woeringen and thereby claimed the duchy Limburg.
The dukes of Brabant thereby controlled the important trade route from Brugge to Cologne. After the death of the last independent duke, Filips van St. Pol (1427-1430), the duchy was incorporated into the Burgundian realm.
