Contemporary imitations and counterfeits of Leeuwendaalders / Löwentaler / Lion daalders: This Dutch trade coin was struck in the various mints in the Republic of the Seven United Provinces since 1577 and became a popular trade coin in Europe and the Levant in the 17th century. As a result other states started to imitate this coin. Examples are Jever in Germany and Corregio in Italy. Contemporary forgies started to appear in various forms. Silvered coins with a copper core, Leeuwendaalders of low weight, etc.
A interesting contemporary forgery is the type that used to be ascribed to the German county of Rietberg and is dated 1660. There are different varieties in text. Without exception these coins have a copper core with silvering. Nowadays it is believed this coin was struck somewhere in the Levant or Eastern Europe, but on a fairly large scale. To get an impression of the scale of this coinage I am collecting all information on varieties of this coin. If you have information on such a coin I would appreciate if you can provide details on text or a detailed picture to add to my data.
A Leeuwendaalder of the "Rietberg" type
information on other types of imitations and forgeries of Leeuwendaalders is also collected
Dutch gold ducats found in Central Asia and Northern India: The Dutch gold ducat was a trade coin that became very popular in Russia and Central Asia in the 18th and 19th century. So much that the Russians started to strike exact copies of this coin for their trade from Orenburg on Central Asia. From Central Asia (Bukhara, Persia, Kabul, etc) these coins were carried to Northern India. As much of the gold foreign coins in India they were used as basis for Indian coins or jewelry or imitated. I am collecting data on the use of dutch gold ducats in Central Asia and India as either trade coin or jewelry and find spots of these coins in the past. ![]() ![]()
Crusader coins found in the Netherlands and coins of the Low Countries found in the Levant Crusaders from the Netherlands played a relatively small part in the history of the Crusader States, but they are mentioned in contemporary sources and in a few cases coins of this period both of crusaders states and surrounding muslim states are found in the Netherlands. It is thought they were brought back by returning crusaders, but the evidence is very little to make any valid assumptions. Coins from the Low Countries of this period are not found in the territories of the former crusaders states Tripoli, Antioch or Jerusalem as far as I know. I am collecting any information on find spots of crusader coins in The Netherlands and find spots in the Levant of Dutch coins .
