How I Became A Stonecutter

Martin at workI like to create things, especially from stone. Stone is a material that has always fascinated me. What I like most is to work with hammer and chissel in the old fashioned way. I make all kind of things, amongst others tombstones, tables, sculptures. I consider it as an honor to work with stone, a material that is up to millions of years old. Creating objects that will live longer than that I will. When people ask me 'how did you made that rose out of stone?',  my usual answer is: 'I just take a piece of stone and basically remove everything that does not look like a rose, and there you are!' It is a joke that I like to make, but, in fact, it is also the truth and the way in which I like to work. I don't like to waste too much time at the drawing table. The thing I want to make is already inside the rock, it is just a matter of revealing it.
