The
mentioned restaurants are probably not the best restaurants in town,
but I'm no professional food critic and I have to pay for my own meals.
All are friendly, laid back places. A great guide to many more restaurants
is Iens independent index (in Dutch).
Tarifa,
Raadhuisstraat
- Small,
genuine tapas bar. Very central, 200 m. from Dam square. Chorizo
in red winesauce and Andulusian tiles.
Toscana,
Haarlemmerstraat
-
Cheap restaurant with friendly staff. Large building with a mixed
crowd, though mostly students and young tourists. Marinara pizza
& snails
Kuipers,
Boomstraat
-
Great food; original and surprising dishes.
Manzano,
Rozengracht
-
Nice tapas menu. Great building and outdoors. Crowded, so call
ahead.
La
Paella, Warmoesstraat
- Another
great Spanish restaurant with, surprise, lots of paella. Great
service, great view: across from the infamous former Warmoesstraat
police station (red light district).
Da
Gigi, Hartenstraat
-
Best pizza's in town. Owner loves to tell about the difference
between Italy and Amsterdam-North and yesteryear when judges still
came to have lunch in his restaurant.
Struisvogel,
Keizersgracht
- Cheap
menu's, in a small basement along the canal. Lots of ostrich,
call ahead.
Also
worth a try:
- Proust,
Noordermarkt
- Noa
(Noodles of Amsterdam), Leidsegracht
- Wapper,
Reestraat
- Duende,
Lindengracht
- Het
Zuiden, Wolvenstraat
- Dulac,
Haarlemmerstraat
