Oases in the Exurban Desert
Oases in the exurban desert is the name of my PhD project with urban research institute AME at the University of Amsterdam. Results of my interview and survey research will be published on these pages in a few weeks. Here is a short description of the main theme:
"In the past, spatial identities never were very complicated: there were urbanites and villagers, and cities and villages. Now, an intricate network of diverse spatial units has come into being, in which the old villages and downtowns are but two types of places within a sea of suburban developments, office parks, warehouses and shopping malls. My research is about the changing identities in the Randstad as an 'urban field' – about suburbanites, exurbanites, original urbanites, new urbanites, new urban immigrants, original villagers and new villagers, and the places they prefer or abhore."
