with even feet

Cf. "Slowly" in the previous stanza. Apart from indicating the steady and inevitable approach of the horses, the line might also be a reference to Emily Dickinson: " We trust, in plumed procession, / For such the angels go, / Rank after rank, with even feet / And uniforms of snow." (Life, XVI) - that is, if he'd ever read her. But he says he hasn't.
