eye

Presumably the eye is Bleistein's - however, in the previous stanza Bleistein's features were described in the plural, and 'eyes' would be expected here. Hence it is often thought that this eye does not refer to Bleistein, but someone else. But single eye may refer to Whitman's 'protrusive lip' (see protrusive).
