In Shakespeare's play, Hamlet has had a vision of his father who told him that his uncle killed his father. To find out whether his vision was true, he stages a play for his uncle which contains a similar murder, called the Mousetrap, "a tale of a murther done in Vienna." At the point at which the murder occurs in the play, the uncle calls for lights and therewith unwittingly confesses his guilt to Hamlet. (3.2.285-6) reference topics
