Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768). Venetian painter whose name is almost synonymous with Venice; cf. Gautier, Le Carnaval de Venise, where he calls Venice: "La ville de Canaletto!" Hence Bleistein has a perspective of the history of time from the exodus to Venice, where he is now.
