the seven laws

In The Stones of Venice, in the chapter on the St. Mark, John Ruskin explains his seven laws of architecture. At the conclusion, comparing Venice to the tall buildings of the North, he wrote: "we have here low walls spread before us like the pages of a book, and shafts whose capitals we may touch with our hand."
