The interior of St. Magnus Martyr is to my mind one of
the finest among Wren's interiors. See The Proposed
Demolition of Nineteen City Churches: (P.S. King
& Son, Ltd.). [Eliot's note] In these lines, the
"pleasant" music, the "fishmen"
resting after labour, and the splendour of the church
interior all suggest a world of true values, where work
and relaxation are both real and take place in a context
of religious meaning. It is but a momentary glimpse of an
almost lost world.
