Harrie van Heumen started playing icehockey at age 9 and already made his debut as a 15 year old youngster in the 1974-75 season. As so many in that period he was a product of the Alex Andjelic youth program in Nijmegen and he was one of the first talents that came out of that. He was a constant goalscorer due to his natural speed and on-ice vison.

Van Heumen was also one the only Nijmegen-born player to play for Holland during their campaign on the 1980 Olympic Games in lake Placid.

Van Heumen went to Rotterdam together with Robbert Prick van Wely and Ben Tijnagel before the 1986-87 season. During his stay there he won the championship 3 times. He played there for 5 seasons before moving to Utrecht in the 1991-92 season. He did not stay in Utrecht for long because he returned home to Nijmegen during that same season. He continued to play for Nijmegen untill 1994.

Furthermore did Van heumen coach Nijmegen during a brief period in the 1999-2000 and made
a shocking return on the ice as a player the year after that for icehockey club Den Bosch.

Van Heumen played a total of 15 years for Nijmegen. During that period he played 477 games and tallied a total of 584 points. He became champion of Holland 5 times.

For the dutch National side he played 89 times and scored 32 points and was a member of the Dutch 1980 Olympic team.
Currently van Heumen is the assistant coach of the Nijmegen Tigers.
