ss, tutorials and "Tips & Tricks"

Since our release of the tool we got several open questions. I can imagine that each new user has a different appraoch. One can start with reading the specification description and watch the screenshots and then get started, another might forget about it, install the tool and read through the Help pages, and yet another user might install the tool and get started, exploring what he /she can or cannot do. This page is created to give some extra hands-on, in the form of some tutorials/exercises, and tips & tricks.

Example - major revision of three SD Cards

Installation of the tool

Hint: Before installing the KN-SDExplorer tool, it is wise to check what the drive letter is for your default SD Card-reader. Most times when you connect a reader to your PC via USB connection, a new drive letter is added for it in Windows Explorer. Mostly it is called "Removable Disk". During installation the software asks you for the drive letter and by default it is set to E:

IF THIS IS NOT YOUR REMOVABLE DRIVE then unless you correct this E to whatever your drive is then this will result in the SDExplorer trying to read the wrong drive and will not work.

So for instance, if your Removable drive is D: or F: etc., Change the E to whichever applies to your PC remembering to ensure that the : is after the drive letter
e.g. D: - correct
e.g. D wrong.

F: correct
F wrong.

Double click SDExplorer.msi

Press Next>

Change the default E: into the correct drive letter. Then press Next>

Now you can click Next> again, or change the location where the tool will be installed. "Everyone" vs. "Just me" is to determine the profile (yourself or "All Users")

Press Next again. Now installation is executed, (matter of seconds to maybe a minute)

Lessons from Joan:

Make a BACKUP of the SD Card which is in your Card Reader and within the SDExplorer software. Trying to create this feature in Microsoft will not work!

Make a note of your folder where you wish the backup file will be saved to;
e.g. Folder name: FINISHED SD BACKUPS

With the SDExplorer folder displayed on your PC screen. Select FILE, BACKUP, select required folder as example above. Name your new backup file with your choice of title.

You will finish with a folder called e.g. FINISHED SD BACKUPs and in it there will be your backup document as you have just named with your choice of title.

How to RESTORE a previously backuped version of an SD Card, in SDExplorer to an SD Card in your Card Reader.

Open the folder where you keep your backup SD files. E.g. as above, FINISHED SD BACKUPS

With the cursor on the name of the file you wish to restore, e.g. the Technics Free Styles you have just backup-ed. Left Click Mouse to select correct the required file and then Right Mouse Click to open the options. The top item is RESTORE KN7000 SD Card. Select this and the Browse for folder options list appears.

*Cursor to select My Computer and then to your Removable Drive. Select.

Your restored backup will show and you will be able to watch the banner to see what is happening. When finished your SD folder will appear and will be ready for you to use.

*TO BACKUP TO A FOLDER ON THE PC. Data will be overwritten if you backup to an existing file.

Instead of selecting your removable drive you will choose a folder/file of your choice on your PC.
This can be an empty folder that you have created for this purpose. If this folder contains data already then you will get a message advising you of this. Any data in this folder will be overwritten if you proceed.

How to RESTORE a previously backuped version of an SD Card, in SDExplorer to a folder chosen by you on your PC.

Data will be overwritten if you backup to an existing file.

Instead of selecting your removable drive you will choose a folder/file of your choice on your PC.
This can be an empty folder that you have created for this purpose.

SD Card in Card Reader . Activate SDExplorer software.

Select FILE - RESTORE - choose which folder to RESTORE to - creating a new folder if necessary.

If this folder contains data already then you will get a message advising you of this. Any data in this folder will be overwritten if you proceed.

MERGE - This could be either to a card already in the SD Reader OR to a specific folder on your Desktop.

The Merge function in KN-SDExplorer works differently than in SongManager. In SongManager one can use Merging to merge two backup (sdb-) files into one sum backup file. In KN-SDexplorer however Merging is incremental/additional restoring a backup file to an exisitng folder structure. So suppose that there are 20 folders on your SD Card and you have an sdb file which is a backup of 13 folders, then Merging adds these 13 folders to the existing 20, making the resulting tree of 33 folders.

In KN-SDExplorer select menu item File... Merge....
In the "Open"dialog browse to your folder with sdb files, e.g. FINISHED SD BACKUPS, and select the sdb-file you want to merge. The dialog box "Merge SD..." appears and you see the addional restoring process.

Please note: The instructions below are maybe not the only method to get the same result. I think they are a reasonably simple way.
SDExplorer - an example of a major revision of 3 SD cards.

As it is quite time consuming to restore 3 full cards you may wish to select one small SD card that you have and restore it three times to the different folders just to try out this exercise.

I worked on one 8Mb SD disk with about 5 folders.

Lets assume that you need to make a major revision/clean up of several SD cards and you wish to finish up with an amalgamated one or two.

For this exercise we will use three SD cards e.g SD1, SD2 and SD3 You wish to selectively move/copy/delete files etc., and then you wish to produce a new card with the finished selections.

TO START - BACKUP ALL THESE THREE SD CARDS.

Create 3 separate folders on your desktop naming them for e.g. SD1, SD2, SD3.

1. Move to the folder that contains the BACKUP (sdb)file that you wish to Restore. (THIS IS NOT THE NEW FOLDER SD1 that you have created) In this example the main folder is called SD ALL and my previously backup file is called 8MB Test Card. Right mouse click on this sdb-file.

Select "Restore KN7000 SD Card...". The Browse for Folder option below example. Cursor to the Desktop, and SD1 and select OK

By selecting 8MB test card and OK gives you the screen below which is the contents of the 8MB test.

Repeat these steps to restore a second and third previously created backup to folders SD2 and SD3. Your desktop now should look similar to below. In this instance I have restored the same file three times to SD1, SD2 and SD3 – You would almost certainly be restoring three completely different files. You are now ready to move/copy from one SDfolder to another etc.

This may take some time to do but you will find that if you are doing a major revision of cards that you will be able to manipulate your data quicker in Microsoft than from USB Reader/Writers.

Move/Copy/Delete/Rename whatever, from one KN-SDExplorer folder to another.
At any time during the time you are working on the folders on the PC you can file the index of each card folder and then print out to see in detail, folder by folder, what you have done so far etc.,

When all the changes are done to your satisfaction, use BACKUP and RESTORE to your new SD Card and you are then ready to read this on your KN7/KN2600.
