Harry Potter stays in the summer holidays again with his uncle and aunt Dursley. On the morning of 31 July Harry hears that aunt Marge will stay with them. Harry doesn't like aunt Marge at all. However, he promises to behave himself properly and act just as he were a Muggle, if uncle Vernon promises to sign a form. With this form Uncle Vernon gives permission to Harry to go in the school year to Hogsmeade.

Aunt Marge insults Harry's parents continually. She goes this far that Harry loses his patience. He performs a Swelling Charm, which causes aunt Marge to inflate like a giant balloon. Harry knows now that he is in trouble and runs away. The Knight bus picks him up. Harry hears from the driver that Sirius Black, a dangerous prisoner of Azkaban, is escaped.

Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic, is very worried about this. Harry is surprised that Fudge doesn't punish him for the mistake with Aunt Marge. Fudge is that worried about Harry that he books a room for him at the Leaky Cauldron. On this way Harry has a holiday week at Diagon Alley.
At the first of September the Hogwarts Express goes to Hogwarts. In the compartment of Harry, Ron and Hermione sits a strange man. He turns out to be the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, his name is Remus Lupin. Hagrid is also appointed as a new teacher, he teaches Care of Magical Creatures.

Dementors are guarding Hogwarts. Dementors are the guards of Azkaban and are really frightening. A Dementor sucks all the good feelings out of you. They are used to refrain Black, who's after Harry, from entering Hogwarts. Harry faints the first time he meets a Dementor and hears his mother screaming.

At Halloweens the students are allowed to go to Hogsmeade. Harry can't go with them because he hasn't got a signed form. Thanks to Fred and George who had the Marauders' Map (a map with all of the secret passages of Hogwarts on it) Harry is able to go in secret.

In a pub he hears by accident the story of Sirius Black and on what way this man killed his parents.

A Hippogriff wounded Draco Malfoy during a lesson of Hagrid, but Draco caused this himself. Lucius Malfoy is angry and starts a trial against Hagrid. The hippogriff has to be killed.

Harry sometimes sees a big dog that resembles a Grim. The Grim is a dog that dwells around cemeteries and is supposed to be the worst death omen. On the evening that Ron, Hermione and Harry visit Hagrid to comfort him because of the hippogriff they come across Hermione's cat and the Grim. Ron is being dragged to a secret room under the Whomping Willow. Here they meet Sirius Black, but he turns out to be not after Harry, but after Scabbers, Ron's rat. Sirius Black turns out to be an Animagus, someone who can transform into an animal. So Black is the dog that Harry saw so many times. Scabbers is in the real world Peter Pettigrew, the true murderer of Harry's parents. Pettigrew had acted everything that time on such a way that Sirius got convicted by everyone of the murders. Black was able to escape out of Azkaban because he kept his powers due to the fact he was innocent.

Then Lupin appears, too. Lupin turns out to transform every month, when it's full moon, into a Werewolf. A long time ago Remus Lupin, James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew were good friends. Together they made the Marauders Map. Sirius Black even turns out to be Harry's godfather. Harry didn't want anything more than stay with him during every summer holidays, but unfortunately this isn't going to happen. Peter Pettigrew (Scabbers) escapes and the Dementors are still after Black. Nobody believes the story except for Dumbledore.

Hagrid trial ends sadly. The hippogriff has to be killed and this happens. Hermione has got a Time-Turner, which you can use to travel back into the time. Because Sirius Black is in danger and can get the Dementor's kiss any moment, Harry and Hermione travel back into time. They save Hagrid's Hippogriff and fly to the room where Sirius is locked in. Sirius escapes on the back of the Hippogriff.

The school year is over and Gryffindor wins for the first time in a very long time span the Quidditch Cup!

In the train back to the Muggle world a tiny owl flies through the window with a letter for Harry, from Sirius. In the letter is written that Harry has now got permission to go to Hogsmeade. Harry is really happy about this!
