Harry is about to start his 5th year at Hogwarts when dementors attack his cousin Dudley in Little Whinging. Dementors are magical creatures who kill people. Harry has to use the Patronus Charm to defence himself. But young wizards are not allowed to use magic outside Hogwarts, so he has to go to the Ministry for a trial, because of underage magic. To his relief he doesn't get expelled from Hogwarts. After the attack Harry hasn't to stay at his uncle's house, he is allowed to come to the headquarter of the Order of the Phoenix, Grimmauld Place. The Weasley family, Hermoine and Sirius Black (a friend of Harry's father) are also there.
When they go back to school after the holidays, there is a new teacher: Professor Umbridge. She's from the Ministry of Magic. Fudge, the Minister of Magic, dislikes Dumbledore and Harry Potter, because they say Voldemort is back - Fudge won't believe this. That's why he gives Umbridge more and more power at Hogwarts, she even becomes Headmaster. Dumbledore gets expelled, because Fudge doesn't want him to spread around that Voldemort has returned. Umbridge is also teacher of the subject Defence against Dark Arts, but according to her the students aren't allowed to practise this defence anymore. So Harry, Ron and Hermoine start a club to practise still with many other students who believe Harry and Dumbledore do tell the truth. The call themselves 'Dumbledore's Army'.
Harry is having dreams. He sees things happening and he dreams he walks through the Ministry of Magic searching for something, but he
doesn't know what. Dumbledore and Sirius think it's Voldemort, trying to get into Harry's thoughts. That's why Snape has to learn him occlumency, to defence himself to an attack of Voldemort to his mind. But Snape hates Harry because he has been bullied by Harry's father when he was a student at Hogwarts himself, so the lessons are a big failure.
One night Harry sees in his dream that Voldemort and the Death Eaters (his followers, Draco Malfoy's father is one of them, but just a few people including Harry know this) are torturing Sirius Black at the Ministry of Magic. Harry, Ron, Hermoine and a few more members of Dumbledore's Army fly to the Ministry to try to rescue him. But when they have arrived, the notice it's a trap, for Sirius isn't there, but some Death Eaters are. The children have to fight to Voldemort's followers, but they are about to loose. When Harry and his friends are almost lost, the members of the Order of the Phoenix arrive just in time and help them. During the fight, Sirius is killed.
Then Voldemort comes into the Ministry, he wants Harry to give him a kind of strange bottle he found in the Ministry. In the bottle is a prophecy, but the bottle breaks. Voldemort gets really furious and tries to kill Harry. Just in time Dumbledore comes to rescue him and to fight to Voldemort. Voldemort escapes, but Minister Fudge has seen Voldemort is really back.
Back at school, Harry is very sad and angry about Sirius' death, he had been like a father to Harry. Then Dumbledore tells him the truth about Harry's whole life. The prophecy was made before Harry was born. It said that a boy would be born who had the power to vanish the Dark Lord (Voldemort). One of them would be killed by the other, so just one of them should survive. That boy is Harry, so he will have to kill Voldemort or Voldemort will kill him. Harry's 5th year is over now and the Ministry at last believes Voldemort has really returned, so the start to convince al the wizards and witches that Dumbledore and Harry had right.
Harry has to go back to Little Whinging, but the whole Order of the Phoenix will be looking after him.
