"The Tower-eaters" (De tuorkefretters)

How the Wirdumers got their nickname "The Tower-eaters"!

In ancient times the village Wirdum was a wealthy place. This was proven by the two towers decorating the sturdy church named after the Holy Saint Martines of Tours.
However after a period of domestic quarrels between the "Schieringers" and "Vetkopers" the population impoverished and they could no longer maintain their towers. The oldest was demolished and sold, to make cement of it, to the village named Makkum.
So the people of Wirdum were blamed for consuming their tower and therefore got the nickname "Tower-eaters".
