A spice market in IstanboelSpices and herbs in a glass potKitchen herbs and spices are flavor enhancers in many dishes, like salt and pepper. We distinguish herbs, all originating from fresh small green vegetables, and spices mostly in dried form. In addition to that spices are mostly imported from southern and warmer countries, around the equator.

Many herbs and spices are nowadays available in dried form in a glass pot from the supermarket. But fresh prepared they taste much better, especially from your own herb garden. Fitted for a Dutch garden are parsley, chive, celery, etc. The spices from the Dutch East-Indies made the Netherlands once a rich country. Here under we let pass some of the most beloved sorts of herbs and spices in a table.

There are also diverse mixtures of herbs and spices, mostly salt added, on the market for meat, chicken and fish, such as for example roast, grill & barbecue mix. Also chili powder, curry powder, Knorr aromat and maggi sauce as flavors contain diverse herbs and spices. The same counts for many sauces in tube or glass pot.

Soy sauceSoy sauce is made of soybeans, with other ingredients added, such as grain, salt and water. There are many sorts of soy sauce, depending on the country of origin. In the Netherlands we know in particular the Indonesian kecap or ketjap manis (sweet soy sauce) and ketjap asin (salt soy sauce). These sauces are especially appropriate for bakmi (bami), nasi goreng and rice dishes.
