1. Setting default options: Retry and email address When you have installed Bullet Proof FTP, the first thing you will need to do is set the defaults. If you don't do this you will likely be banned from most, if not all, of the FTP servers in the newsgroup. Open the Options menu in the top left of the window. From this menu, select General Options... Enter at least 60 in the retry delay (seconds) field. Enter your email address in the Email address field. This doesn't have to be your real email address assigned by your ISP but it is good practice to use a valid email address. you can use a "throw away" address from one of the many free servers like www.hotmail.com or www.yahoo.com. Click the OK button to save your changes and close the dialogue. 2. Connecting to a site Now you're ready to connect to a site. To quickly connect without adding the site to your site list, simply type the site address in the Host field (this will be either a string or 4 numbers separated by periods, eg. kingpin.dynip.com or 123.123.123.123) and the port number in the Port field. If a port was not specified for the site, it will most likely be the default FTP port 21. Next, if you want to log in to this site anonymously, just press enter and Bullet Proof will try to connect. If, on the other hand, a login and password are specified for the site enter them in the appropriate fields, then press enter to connect. If you decide that you want the current site added to your site list, just click the Add site icon (6th from the left on the tool bar). 3. Adding a site to the site manager If you would like to keep the connection information about a site you can add it to your site manager. You can do this in two ways. When you are already connected to the site, in BulletProof's main window you can click the Add site icon (6th from the left on the tool bar).. Otherwise, and alternatively, you can click the Site manager icon (4th from the left on the tool bar) to open the Site Manager dialogue. Enter the display name for the site in the Site Name field, the address in the Site Address field and the port number in the Port field. You may also want to put your download folder in the Initial Local Directory field. If you want to connect to this site anonymously, leave the Login and Password fields blank, otherwise type your login and password into the appropriate fields. When you're done, just click the Connect button. This will save the information in your site list, close the dialogue, and attempt to connect to the site. 4. Copy & Paste doesn't work (anymore) You might want to copy and save your bpft.dat file and uninstall bulletproof and reinstall it again ...everything should work ... (this tip was provided by E1) 5. I want to backup my site lists - how do I do that ? Copy and save your bpft.dat file. 6. Switching Passive Mode on/off In the menu Options, General Options, Firewall. To enable check Enable FTP firewall/proxy and make sure Passive is selected. To disable uncheck the Enable FTP firewall/proxy.
