Read some pieces of Melissa's interview with MEIN:
Now that you have four beautiful children, the partner you
always dreamed of and you are a cancer survivor, what is the one
thing you wish you would have known when you were younger? Terry
D.
Melissa: That life is best spent in the now. I would have taken
my time a little bit more and not lived so much in the future
about what I was going to do and what I was going to be. That's
the only difference. I don't have many regrets.
You are over forty, a survivor and you just put together a
tour across the U.S. and Canada with 51 shows over 78 days. You
always give 120 percent at each show and you will be traveling
with your wife and 2-4 kids. How do you do it? Lynne K.
Melissa: OMG!!! (laughs) Yeah, I know. It's pretty intense. I
have a wife who is a super mom. She keeps the family and the business
of the family together so well. She is already planning exactly
what is going in the bus; we already have exactly what the kids
are going to be sleeping in. We've been planning it for months
now, how and what we are going to do, and she's got everything
under control. If it wasn't for her, I would not be able to do
it by myself. It's a wonderful blending of my professional and
personal life because the two are so connected. It's a joy for
me to have my family with me when I work. It's just a pleasure.
The twins will be with us and because I share custody, Beckett
and Bailey will come and go; they will be out there for some shows.
The times that they are out there - wheee-hah!!! (laughs)
How long does it take you and the band to get back into rhythm
after a long lay off? Do you have many rehearsals before the tour
starts and how to you chose which songs to practice? Stacey T.
Melissa: That is the process I am in right now. Fritz, Mark &
Philip know the good majority of the songs and we have already
worked them up. Paul is new and he has slowly been working them
up as we go along. I just sent off a list of about 70 songs or
more that I will be picking and choosing from for this summer
tour.
I'm going to rework a few songs and give them a new musical approach,
so we will need to work those up. I'm trying something different
and long time fans will totally see and get what I'm doing. If
you haven't seen me before, it will be a good show but I think
the long time fans are going to see how I'm doing it differently
and what I'm trying to do. Like The Awakening, I'm going to tell
a story with all of the songs throughout the show. But each night
I will be doing different songs to sort of tell the same story.
It's a big undertaking but I think all the musicians understand.
We've got about a week of rehearsal before we start the tour.
Those of you who see a lot of shows know that the shows are always
evolving and changing. Even though we rehearse for a week at the
beginning of the tour, you can go see the first show and then
when you go see the last one there will be a lot of different
things in it. We are constantly learning and working on it as
we go along.
You've had many moments in your career that must stand out
for you. Examples, Grammys, Oscar, Live Earth. What are your top
three memories from concerts, whether on stage or with your fans?
Kristina S.
Melissa: Some of my best memories are with my fans. There was
the time I was in Rotterdam Holland at the Ahoy. I started the
song "Like The Way I Do" which was a huge hit in Holland,
and they started flicking their lighters on the beat. It started
in a small section and every time they flicked the lighters, on
the beat more and more would join in. A lot of people smoked back
then so there were a lot of lighters. The whole place was just?everyone
just flicking these lighters. It was spontaneous and I had never
seen it before. It stopped me in my tracks. I just stopped playing
and I was completely overcome. When an audience can interact with
you unexpectedly it is very overwhelming. That has happened to
me a couple of times.
There was a time at Madison Square Garden. There was a fan club
package and they were all in this one area. I believe they all
lit up lighters during "Silent Legacy" all at the same
time. That overwhelmed me, too. It was like "gasp" -
when a group of people get together and do one thing and at one
time, that always moves me. It is very powerful. Just this last
year in New York they held the "I'm Awake" bumper stickers
up during "What Happens Tomorrow." My whole thing is
about trying to wake people up and then to have everyone hold
up the bumper stickers that say "I'm Awake" was so nice.
It can also be a single fan doing something that blows my mind.
After the Greatest Hits tour when Inconvenient Truth was out and
"I Need To Wake Up" was on it, I remember playing in
Toronto. All sorts of craziness was going on and then there was
this one sign from this one fan and it simply said "I'm Awake."
I was thinking, "Somebody is getting it. It's about waking
up." And just the one sign made a difference. The fans are
constantly being involved with the show and moving me emotionally
and spiritually.
That is because you reach people and they want to let you know
that.
Melissa: Well, it's definitely a two-way street.
A question that every European fan wants to know. You will
not be touring Europe this summer but, "if not now...when?"
Sandra R. (!!!!)
Melissa: awww. I know. It is the result of so many different
things. Being a mother I have made the choice to only tour in
the summer time because of school and being here and available
for orchestra recitals and the things that happen during the school.
I have just made a promise to do that. I am dedicated to doing
that. We were going to start the tour in Europe, and financially
now our dollar is so weak and we are in a recession. I can tell
by ticket sales and by what is happening out there. People are
getting nervous about their money. So unfortunately it is an economic
thing, too. I know I could go over there solo some time. I am
thinking about that for next time. I miss Germany, Holland, London,
Austria. I have such a great time there and I want to take my
kids there. So I don't have an answer as to exactly when but do
know that both Europe and Australia are two places that I will
go. I miss my fans and I really want to go back and connect with
them. As soon as is feasible, I will be doing that.
We hear you are recording a Christmas album. Will it be all
original compositions or will you be covering other Christmas
tunes? Angela C.
Melissa: There are four standard, traditional Christmas songs
and then I wrote five or six songs, so it's kind of a mixture
of both. It's an interesting mix we've got. It's a pretty rockin'
album for being a Christmas album. It's very different. It's a
Christmas album for everybody else.
