Melissa Etheridge
is not only a great singer and a great songwriter, she is also
very political aware.
She is supportive to a number of gay equal rights organisations
like GLAAD
(Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and The
Human Rights Campaign.
It is true that the gay community has gained more and more rights
throughout the years, but it is just the beginning of a long process
that has to be continued.
Especially when you read these horrible stories in the newspaper,
like the murder of Matthew Shepard or Brandon Teena. Or when you
read articles full of hatred and ignorance, like the articles
of Fred Phelps.
As long as things like this occur, it is necessary to spread the
word and to SPEAK TRUE.Therefor I would like to ask you your full
attention and some of your time. Please read carefully what is
written below and I am sure that you never will forget...
Thanks.
Scarecrow
Matthew Shepard was a 21-year-old University of Wyoming student
who died in october 1998 from injuries sustained in an anti-gay
attack.
He was beaten and left to die hanging on a split-rail fence (like
a scarecrow) by two 21-year-old men.
Melissa Etheridge wrote the song "Scarecrow" as a tribute to Matthew
Shepard.

Boys Don't
Cry
Teena Brandon was anatomically a female, but he lived his life
as a man (Brandon Teena) in preparation for a sex-change surgery.
On december 31 1993, two young men murdered 21-year-old Brandon
by shooting and stabbing him. A week prior to this horrible crime,
the same men had kidnapped and raped Brandon. They had found out
that Brandon was indeed biological female.
If you would like to know more about Brandon Teena I recommend
to you the movie "Boys Don't Cry". It's a very intense movie that
will really hit you!

Also on the Internet you may find hatred and discrimination. A
"good" example of a website full of hate and prejudice is the
site of American Fred Phelps who is a member of the Baptist Church.
To give you an idea of what to find on his website I will give
you Phelps' opinion concerning the death of Matthew Shepard:
"He (Matthew
Shepard) lived a satanic lifestyle. Unless he repented in the
final hours of his life, he is in hell. He will be in hell for
all eternity, where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched"
The site
contains horrible sermons and even a clip of Matthew Shepard burning
in hell. If you would like to experience this site yourself you

An Inconvenient
Truth
Melissa is not only very supportive to gay equal rights, but also
on environmental issues like global warming.
Al Gore asked her to arrange the Oscar-winning soundtrack "I
Need To Wake Up" for his documentary "An Inconvenient
Truth". This documentary offers a passionate and inspirational
look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly
progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions
that surround it. If you want to read the lyrics of the song "I
Need To Wake Up", just click here.
She also performed at the concert Live Earth on 07-07-2007 which
was a 24-hour, 7-continent concert serie that brought together
more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people to trigger a
global movement to solve the climate crisis.
