A-Class

The A also known as RA class (vane and radio respectively), started in 1922 by the Editor of Yachting Monthly with the intent of being a scaled down version of the International 6 metre class.

The rule has developed in to a class where penalties on hull shape trade off speed enhancing factors against sail area and a minimum specified weight mean that competitive boats have a very long life.
From this early beginning, the International A Class Rule was adopted and actively sailed as part of the Model Yacht Racing Association of America (MYRAA).
Unlike many of the classes in AMYA, the A Class rule has experienced few changes over the years.
The boats designed to the rule are basically similar in appearance.

Boats can be built using fiberglass, kevlar, carbon fiber and wood; the sails are made of dacron or mylar.

A modern A-Class is controlled by radio, capable of controlling practically every part of the boat.
The rule allows the designer/builder to create a boat according to the weather conditions in various parts of the world.
On the East Coast of the U.S.A., the boats are 1.73 to 1.83 metres in length, waterlines are 1.14 to 1.22 metres, a sail area of 1.10 square metres and displacement of 13.5 to 20 kg.

A boat built in England averages 1.73 to 1.98 metres in length, has a waterline of 1.25 to 1.40 metres, a sail area of about 0.97 square metres and weighs 22.5 to 34.0 kg.

The AMYA A Class boat is easy to sail and is very stable when properly trimmed.
Their classic big yacht lines make these an aesthetically pleasing model to the onlooker.
Its size, weight and inertia resembles a full size boat which looks very elegant on the water.
Unfortunately the size and weight of these boats has reduced their popularity and the class is only followed in a few dedicated countries.
